the majestic (can you see it?)

At this moment in the early weeks of autumn, how are you doing at having eyes that can see the majestic? If we are not careful life, with its grind, pressure, demands, and busyness, can drain the majestic out of our vision. In Psalm 8:1, King David said, “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!” Everywhere David looked—even in the painful places where there was no natural reason to expect it—he could see the majestic. He could see God’s majesty in all the earth.

After that, he went on to talk about creation, children, and humanity in general, seeing God’s majesty in all of it. In Proverbs 30:18-19 the proverbs writer echoed David’s sentiment, marveling about God’s majesty expressed through romance, a ship sailing in the ocean, and an eagle flying through the air.

There is something amazing about having eyes that can glimpse the majestic. That is what God does. He created us humans in His own image and likeness, and no matter what happens in our lives or how damaged or fallen we become through our situations, choices, or sins, God still looks for, speaks to, and resurrects that image. We have been called into that mission too. We are image viewers we are majesty hunters.

Don’t you want eyes that can see the majestic? I don’t want to busily whisk my kids off to their next activity or event without catching the majesty of children. I don’t want to methodically interact with people without ever pausing to savor the majesty of a relationship, or the beauty and bond of a friendship.

Do you still have eyes to see the majestic? If not, make this a summer prayer, “God, rekindle the ability in me to see the majestic in people and events, even when there doesn’t seem to be a lot of majesty left. Let me see the majestic in life even when life is difficult and crushing.” Then let’s commit to being exporters of the majestic, carrying it to all of the people we interact with so that they too can see it and enter into it.  

“When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, ‘Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.’” (Genesis 28:16)
