Body Art for a New Generation

1 Mins read

In recent years, our culture has increasingly fallen in love with body art. Today, everyone from athletes to executives to students and mothers of small children are sporting detailed, intricate tattoos. Even a prominent theologian recently posted a picture of a complex philosophical theory that he had gotten tattooed across his back.

Do you have any tattoos? Or do you prefer more natural, non-inked skin?

Whether you love, hate, or are indifferent to our obsession with body art, there is a tattoo that each of us needs to get. It is a multi-generational soul tattoo, and Isaiah 44:2-5 tells us what it looks like. In this passage, God is speaking and He says, “I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They will spring up like the grass in a meadow, like poplar trees by flowing streams. One will say, ‘I belong to the Lord’ another will call himself by the name of Jacob; still another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s.’”

What an amazing passage! What an amazing promise from God to reach the next generation with His Spirit. And don’t you love the vivid tattoo imagery: “still another will write on his hand, ‘The Lord’s’”?

I have been praying that you and I and the generations that follow us would all get in line to receive that tattoo. I have been praying that we would be indelibly marked by God so that we always remember who we are and whose we are.

Let’s get that tattoo emblazoned across our soul so that every time we move, every time we reach for something, we remember that we, first and foremost, are “The Lord’s.”
