The watertight person

Dick Lucas, the longtime pastor of one of England’s oldest churches, St. Helen’s Bishopsgate, has said, “The Bible does not give us a watertight argument it gives us a watertight person against whom there is no argument.”

That is so good and helpful to remember. Often, when we speak with our friends, loved ones, or co-workers about matters of faith we can feel pressure to defend the Bible or answer every question or objection to Christianity. This is an understandable pressure—and there certainly are profound answers to all of those questions and objections—but please remember that our faith is not ultimately in an argument it is in the person and ministry of Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the watertight argument. He is the answer to every question and the longing of every heart. To be sure, many people do not realize that Jesus is the object of their longing; however, it is indeed true that everything the human soul could crave—love, life, purpose, freedom, new beginnings, a better way to live—is found in an actual connection with the person of Jesus.

As you do your best to represent God well and share your faith with others, take heart! The Bible does not give us a watertight argument to defend it gives us a watertight person against whom there is ultimately no argument.

For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.” (2 Peter 1:16)
