The Divine Mentor by Wayne Cordeiro: Prologue, Introduction, and Chapter 1: “Sacred Enclosures”
Hi everyone!
I hope you’ve enjoyed the introduction to The Divine Mentor, our book for this summer’s reading program. On a personal note, I loved how Wayne Cordeiro opened up both the prologue and introduction with insights from the life of King David. It was fun for me to read that since we’ll be starting a teaching series together this weekend at Grace called “Dangerous Intersections—a study in the life of David.”
I think this will be a fantastic reading program that will serve to revolutionize our approach to Bible reading and study. Pastor Wayne Cordeiro moves daily devotions from a spiritual discipline or obligation, to a living and breathing interaction with divine “mentors” who can serve as life coaches to each of us.
In the introduction he said, “When the student is ready, the mentors appear. These heroes and legends have been expecting you.” I hope we’re all ready to engage with them in a new and fresh way. By clinging to the wisdom from these men and women of God who, though dead, “still speak” (Hebrews 11:4), we can be spared a lifetime of “if onlys” and regrets.
Psalm 119:18 says, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law.”
Let’s make that our summer prayer as well!
Thoughts to ponder:
- Which “divine mentors” do you most readily relate to? How long has it been since you’ve spent time with them?
- What types of “foot traffic” most threaten the root system of your devotional life with God? What strategies need to be employed to defend against them?
