Night terrors

Terror by Night

They’re pretty awful aren’t they?

Have you ever had a child or a loved one experience the phenomena of night terrors? If you have, you know that they certainly live up to their name, causing the sufferer to bolt upright out of bed in a stressed out, panic-stricken state. And even though doctors assure us that these terrors are forgotten almost instantaneously, it still breaks a parent’s heart to watch their child gripped with such fear-like manifestations.

I think these natural night terrors are a glimpse in to something supernatural. There are spiritual forces at work in the unseen realm attempting to rob peace, bring fear, create division, and generally terrorize God’s children.

And they need to be resisted.

Psalm 91:5 says to those whose confidence is in the Lord, “You will not fear the terror of the night.” And then Song of Songs 3:7-8 shows a picture of what this fearless resistance looks like: “Look! It is Solomon’s carriage, escorted by sixty warriors, the noblest of Israel, all of them wearing the sword, all experienced in battle, each with his sword at his side, prepared for the terrors of the night.”

Let’s stand in prayer on the Word of God and boldly resist night terrors–both the natural ones that manifest as nightmares, anxiety, and insomnia, and the spiritual ones that want to afflict us and rob our destinies.
